How to Start a Community Garden

So if it really is that simple to start a community garden, where do we start?

Start a community garden today

The steps shown below are the basic steps one must take when learning how to start a community garden from scratch.

Organize A Meeting

One of the most crucial steps. Get together with members of your community to discuss how you could benefit from a Community Garden.

The meeting should be an open forum whereby community members can pitch ideas on what type of garden to develop.

For example a community vegetable garden, fruit garden, flower garden, or both. The key to this meeting is to establish key players and start to form an action plan.

Identify Resources

Every Community Garden must think about and plan a budget. Many costs can be alleviated by developing partnerships with local businesses, schools, and even established farmers.

Find people who can supply access to raw and needed materials. This includes tools, funding.

It’s recommended that Community Garden leaders contact a city planner to learn about other potential sites for your garden in case you have not already identified a space.

Find and Pick Location

A community garden can transform a vacant public space that’s been left abandoned and can revitalize communities that are primarily based within urban cites.

An urban garden can also be beneficial to existing rural locations that have potential.

No matter what type of location you choose, ensure the garden has reasonably easy access and can produce around six hours of sunlight daily, plus relatively easy access to a water supply.

Design your Garden

Now it is time to get your garden designed and prepared for growth.

That may include testing soil, gathering raw materials, and generally preparing the garden for use. Some people start with apartment gardening before they go communal.

This is a great opportunity to decide on the design of the garden and the arrangement of the community garden plot.

How do you protect your crop from wildlife or being trodden on? Where will all the tools and garden accessories go?

All these questions can be answered as you and the community begins to design your community garden.

Plant Away

The most exciting part. Get all your favorite plants started. You can make the garden even more sustainable by using native plants, making your own compost, and guerrilla watering techniques if necessary.

Work with your peers to adhere to the urban garden design and ensure that everything is attended to on a regular basis.

You can welcome visitors and even volunteers to help.
